Post Intel Core 2 Duo E2140/E2160 Overclocking Results

    2140 SLA3J MALAY
    1.60GHz/1M/800/06
    L651B***
    Pack Date 23/04/07

    Hello all,

After reading Venom-Crusher's great thread on the E2140 I decided that this had to be the best 'bang-for-buck' CPU going, so I splashed out a very small amount of money on a retail E2140 and slapped it into my 'ok' air cooled rig.

    ASUS P5B-Deluxe Wifi/AP - Thermalright Ultra120/Sharkoon 'Silent' 120mm - 2GB Crucial 10th Anniversary - ANTEC TRIO 550

I first wanted to find out how many free MHz I could get using stock (1.325) vCore . . .

    XtremeStability™

    E2140 [SLA3J] @3000MHz (8x375) - 1.325vCore/BIOS - P5B-Deluxe/Ultra 120 - 36°C/62°C Orthos Load

Very nice, the little chip was happy to run Orthos Small FFTs for over 24 hours @3GHz using just stock voltage. I am enclosing a screenie of the BIOS settings for anyone who needs more info . . .

3GHz is about where my chip max's using 1.325vCore, any higher and Orthos errors pretty fast. I think its safe to assume that most people will have to boost the vCore to obtain more MHz from this little oink once it hits around 3GHz.

You may notice that I have all the INTEL Powersaving features enabled, I have found this has no negative impact on my overclocking.

You may also notice that my temps are quite high lol, think I may have fitted the heatsink badly or something but before I refitted it I was curious to see how the chip reacted to getting a good baking!

I wanted 3.2GHz 'stable' so I slowly bumped the vCore until the chip would pass a 24 hour run of Orthos 'Small FFTs'

    XtremeStability™

    100% Overclock!

    E2140 [SLA3J] @ 3200MHz (8x400) - 1.4vCore/BIOS - P5B-Deluxe/Ultra 120 - 43°C/75°C Orthos Load

Very happy about this clock because I never managed to squeeze an extra 1600MHz from a CPU before and I never achieved a 100% 'stable' overclock

The BIOS settings to run a E2140 @ 3200MHz stable are pretty much the same as the pic posted above, except the FSB has been bumped up and the vCore needed a 0.075v boost (1.325v @ 3000MHz >>> 1.4v @ 3200MHz)

I hope some of you guys (and girls!) find my testing useful, there is still a bit more left in this chip but I got a pile of 'real-life' paper work to get through before I can continue overclocking and do some benchmarking. I know alot of readers here at Xtreme are more interested in crazy high clocks but I am just a mortal with simple equipment, If I can get a 100% overclock from this chip then I'm sure you lot can get even better results!

In the meantime here are some comparisons from a Chinese review . . .

Anyone feel free to post your E2140/E2160 results/screenies here in this thread

    Great clocks boys!

Big.Wayne, have you tried for max. FSB? I wonder if that chip of yours has a wall.

    Venom-Crusher, what's your batch code?

No not yet, I just left the multi at default (x8) and slowly pushed the FSB. I think thats what I should try next, drop the multi and push the FSB even more, although I didn't work out how to make my mobo happy at running higher than about 487MHz-FSB.

Truth be told I have never encountered a 'FSB-Wall' before?

These 51st week batches look pretty good.

Venom-Crusher and SeLecT, can you please post your batches too?
BTW Big.Wayne, are you sure about yours? It looks like a Conroe E6xxx batch, not an Allendale E4xxx.

Finally got round to playing with a 2160 today. To mobo I used isn't a good start for overclocking... but it was (and still is) cheap esp if you have old DDR/AGP bits lying around.

    System:
    E2160
    Asrock 775i65G
    2x256 Corsair XMS3200LL (BH5)
    FX5200 AGP 128MB
    Enermax 430W PSU

In the past I never had much luck getting decent overclocks with this mobo due to the limited fsb control and voltage options. But this CPU seems a better match than the others. The only tweak needed for stability in the bios was to set the mem voltage from auto to high to keep the BH5 fed properly.

The maximum fsb setting in the bios was 300 MHz which was hit easily, if the memory was kept at spec.

Did 20 mins+ of prime95 on each core at 2.7 GHz (300*9). To go past 300, had to use clockgen. Leaving prime95 running in the background I increased it to 2.75 GHz which seemed ok for the short time I left it there. 2.8 GHz broke prime95 stability but still running on desktop. Decreasing ram timings didn't help, I think I might have reached the limit of the CPU at stock voltage, on this mobo at least.

Cooling was an intel copper core hsf (recycled from E6600 box) temps under load topped out around 45C at a room temp of 20C.

great RUn for almost 2 GHz OC there mate..
    gonna try mine soon..
my old E2140 (Q644Hxxx) stuck at 344FSB with default vcore but it can't even boot @ 345 no matter vcore+multi we sets, so it might be some kinda "FSB wall" problem
    can't even clockgened it anyway
and i've BSEL modded it..still no go
tried with 2 different boards (Biostar 965PT and DFI 975x) same result ...

Probaly not that much since cache mostly gives you an advantage in video editing stuff like that. Very nice results though i got mine on the way and see what the QuadGT can do with it.

Yeah nice resulsts. Ive been trying to decide which CPU to get. Its been a tough choice.

There is the E2140/2160's with an intriguing price tag.

    A E4300 retail for about $114 shipped

Also have an offer for a B stepping E6400 retail week 28/32 for $130 shipped.

Hard to decide. Maybe I should just go the cheapest route and pick one of these up. The only thing I dont like it the lower multiplier and cache. I do actually a lot of video encoding and photoshop and such, along with gaming so...bleh.

Nothing extreme but it has been 3 or 4 years since I overclocked so I'm still secretly a little proud of it:

e2160 + cheapo asrock PT880 ultra = 9*300 (2.7Ghz) out of the box, no tweaking except putting the fsb at 300. Those chips are amazing value for money. My whole setup costed 200 euro (2*1gb ddr2 + e2160 + asrock pt880u).
    HTPC (win xp): Turion MT-30 @ 2Ghz | NF4 | XFX 7900GT | 26" TFT
    Development (mac osx): Macbook Pro | Core Duo 1.86Ghz | 1.5GB DDR2
